SONEPUR: The 16th century old and 25-day-long Harihar Kshetra Mela, popularly known as Sonepur mela, was inaugurated on the eve of Kartik Purnima by state land reforms and revenue minister Ramai Ram here on Thursday.
Addressing a gathering of a motley crowd of people at the PRD pandal here, the minister, who inaugurated the fair on behalf of chief minister Rabri Devi, stressed on commercialisation of the Sonepur mela by means of evolving proper marketing systems.
Launching a verbal fusillade against Lok Janshakti Party chief and Union chemical and fertilisers minister Ram Vilas Paswan, Ram said that Paswan was merely daydreaming about Rabri government’s ouster and that his political career was certain to be ruined after the assembly elections in the state.
"He is the most dishonest politician. He won the Hajipur MP seat due to the mercy of RJD chief Lalu Prasad," Ram said.
In fact, the state minister showered heaps of praises on Lalu and assailed Paswan throughout his speech.
"The kidnapping of NHPC officials from near Sarai recently is the handiwork of criminals of a particular party who want to obstruct the development work in road construction," Ram said and added that he would request the RJD chief to initiate measures to declare the Sonepur mela a national fair.
Prominent among those who spoke on the occasion included Shakeel Ahmed Khan, Chandrika Rai, Mohd Ejajul Haq and local BJP MLA Vinay K Singh. At the outset, Saran commissioner Gopal Shankar Prasad welcomed the guests while district magistrate Baidyanath Mishra read out the mela report.
Artists of the state public relations department presented a cultural dance to mark the occasion.
